Overview

Protective factors are the characteristics, conditions, and resources that reduce the likelihood of poor mental-health outcomes and that buffer individuals against the impact of stress, adversity, and risk. In the study of depression and related conditions they are conceptualised as the counterpart to risk factors: rather than increasing vulnerability, they promote resilience, the capacity to adapt and to maintain or recover well-being in the face of difficulty. Protective factors operate at several levels. Individual attributes include effective coping and problem-solving skills, emotional regulation, a sense of purpose and meaning, optimism, and self-efficacy. Interpersonal and social factors include supportive family and peer relationships, social connectedness, and a sense of belonging. Broader environmental and contextual factors include access to education, meaningful activity, economic security, and supportive services and community structures. These factors are thought to lower the risk of depression and suicidal behaviour by strengthening the ability to withstand psychological stressors, by providing support and access to help, and by fostering engagement and hope. Identifying and cultivating protective factors is central to prevention and to interventions that build resilience, such as programmes that develop personal strengths across academic, interpersonal, and cognitive domains or that help individuals pursue meaningful goals. Understanding how protective factors interact with risk informs strategies in mental-health promotion, prevention, and therapy aimed at reducing the burden of depression and supporting psychological well-being.
