Overview

Rape is a traumatic experience that has been linked to the development of depression in victims. Research has found that survivors of rape are more likely to experience depression than non-victims. This is due to the psychological and physiological effects of the trauma, which can include feelings of guilt, fear, helplessness, and intense distress. Additionally, there is evidence that suggests that the time frame between the rape and the onset of depression can often be quite short. These psychological symptoms can lead to further issues, such as difficulty with social interaction, poor academic performance, substance abuse, and thoughts of suicide. As such, it is important to provide victims of rape with access to mental health services and to offer support in order to reduce the risk of depression.
