Overview

HIV/AIDS is a serious medical condition which can have a severe impact on an individual's psychological well-being. Research indicates that depression is one of the most common psychological consequences of living with HIV/AIDS. Depression is a mental health disorder that can have serious long-term effects on physical and emotional health. People living with HIV/AIDS may experience feelings of depression due to their physical health, difficulty adjusting to their diagnosis and medications, the stigma associated with HIV/AIDS, and compounded stress from other diseases or life events. Treatment for HIV/AIDS and depression should be provided for both mental and physical health. Mental health professionals may provide counseling and access to medication to reduce symptoms of depression. Regular exercise, healthy nutrition and self-care are important for managing depression and HIV/AIDS. HIV/AIDS patients should also be connected to social services and support groups which can offer assistance and a sense of community.
