Overview
Depression is a common mental health condition characterized by persistent low mood and a loss of interest or pleasure in activities, lasting for weeks or longer and affecting how a person feels, thinks, and functions. Beyond sadness, it can involve a range of emotional, cognitive, and physical symptoms, including feelings of worthlessness or hopelessness, difficulty concentrating, changes in sleep and appetite, fatigue, and reduced energy. Depression can interfere significantly with work, relationships, and daily life, and in its more severe forms it is a major cause of disability. Its development is understood to involve a combination of biological, psychological, and social factors, and it frequently occurs alongside other health conditions. Depression takes several forms and varies in severity, and it can affect people across the lifespan and in many different circumstances. Recognized and effective approaches to management include psychological therapies, medication, and support addressing social and environmental contributors, often used in combination. Research on depression spans its causes, its relationships with other conditions, its measurement, and the effectiveness of treatments. The journal Depression And Therapy publishes peer-reviewed work on depression, including studies of depression and social support, depression in relation to dementia and chronic illness, and approaches to treatment, and this open-access page gathers research relevant to understanding, measuring, and treating depression.
