Overview
Implant dentistry is the discipline concerned with replacing missing teeth using osseointegrated fixtures, typically titanium roots placed surgically into the jawbone to anchor crowns, bridges, or dentures. Its success depends on adequate bone volume and quality at the implant site, which frequently requires reconstructive procedures before or during placement. Sinus augmentation, performed through the lateral window technique, increases posterior maxillary bone height and commonly employs graft materials such as hydroxyapatite, beta-tricalcium phosphate, and calcium phosphosilicate putty, which act as osteoconductive or bioactive scaffolds for new bone formation. For severely atrophic ridges, combinations of recombinant growth factors and titanium mesh can rebuild the alveolus to receive implants. Treatment planning relies on three-dimensional imaging, with cone beam computed tomography offering volumetric assessment of available bone compared with conventional orthopantomography. The field also advances soft- and hard-tissue preservation strategies, including the socket shield technique for immediate implant placement, alongside emerging biological approaches that functionalize implant surfaces, such as microRNA-mediated modulation, to promote osseointegration. Together these methods address edentulous and partially edentulous patients, balancing surgical reconstruction, biomaterial selection, prosthetic design, and long-term stability to deliver durable, biomechanically sound tooth replacement.
