Overview

Animal models are non-human organisms used experimentally to study biological processes and disease and to evaluate the safety and efficacy of interventions, exploiting physiological, genetic, and pathological homology with humans. They range from invertebrate systems such as Drosophila to rodents and larger mammals, and they enable controlled investigation of disease mechanisms, drug action, and toxicology that cannot ethically or practically be performed in humans. Research employing such models spans diverse domains: histomorphological assessment of gastrointestinal tissue following plant-extract administration, deep brain stimulation targeting for epilepsy, evaluation of candidate imaging agents, and the development of cellular and molecular biomarkers. The drug-discovery pipeline integrating in silico, in vitro, and in vivo approaches situates animal studies within a broader translational workflow, and zoonotic and comparative considerations, including the role of animals during the COVID-19 pandemic, illustrate their relevance to infectious disease. Growing attention to the limitations of animal experimentation has spurred interest in new approach methodologies and high-throughput human-relevant disease-modeling platforms for ethical drug discovery. The journal publishes peer-reviewed experimental studies and reviews using animal and alternative models to investigate disease mechanisms, pharmacology, toxicology, and biomarker development across a range of biomedical applications.
