Overview
Sprague-Dawley rats are an outbred albino laboratory rat strain widely used in biomedical research due to their docile temperament, ease of breeding, and physiological similarity to humans in many experimental contexts. Research published in Current Scientific Research has employed Sprague-Dawley rats primarily as animal models to evaluate therapeutic interventions across multiple physiological systems and disease states. Published studies have investigated proprietary test formulations and biofield energy treatments in models of systemic inflammatory response syndrome induced by cecal slurry, lipopolysaccharide, and bacterial challenge, as well as cardiovascular disorders induced by L-NAME and high-fat diet. Additional research has examined vitamin D3 deficiency models, unpredictable chronic stress protocols, D-galactose-induced aging dysfunction, and TNBS-induced ulcerative colitis. Outcome measures reported across these studies include inflammatory cytokines, cardiac performance parameters, antioxidant activity, neurotransmitter levels, immunomodulatory markers, and sleep biomarkers. The journal has also published methodological work on analytical techniques for measuring bioactive compounds in rat plasma and literature reviews examining biological effects of radiofrequency radiation exposure in rat models. This body of work reflects the continued importance of Sprague-Dawley rats in preclinical testing of novel formulations and in understanding complex pathophysiological processes.
