Overview

Biological sciences comprise the scientific disciplines that study living organisms and the processes of life, from molecules and cells to organisms, populations, and ecosystems. The field investigates how organisms are structured, how they function, how they grow, reproduce, and evolve, and how they interact with one another and their environment, integrating approaches from molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, physiology, and ecology. Core lines of inquiry include the molecular characterisation of biological compounds through spectroscopy and molecular docking, the study of enzymes and metabolic transferases as indicators of physiological state, and the response of organisms and tissues to chemical exposure and toxicants, as seen in work on the effects of agents on liver and muscle in fish. Dose-response relationships are a recurring theme, reflecting how the quantity of a substance modulates an organism's physiology. The biological sciences also intersect with biotechnology, applying knowledge of living systems and their molecules to develop tools, processes, and products, and with bioethics, which addresses the responsibilities that accompany growing biological knowledge and capability. Spanning fundamental discovery and applied research, the field seeks to explain the mechanisms underlying life across scales, providing the foundation for advances in medicine, agriculture, environmental management, and the study of biodiversity, organismal function, and the molecular basis of health and disease.
