Overview

Treatment options for colon cancer are the therapeutic strategies used to manage malignancy of the large bowel, selected according to tumour stage, location, molecular features, and the patient's overall health. Surgical resection of the tumour with regional lymph nodes is the principal curative treatment for localized disease, while chemotherapy is used in the adjuvant setting to reduce recurrence and in the palliative setting for advanced disease. Radiotherapy has a defined role chiefly in rectal cancer, and targeted agents and immunotherapy are increasingly applied based on molecular characteristics such as specific gene mutations or mismatch-repair status. Treatment planning is guided by staging, pathology, and biomarker assessment. This topic encompasses the surgical, pharmacological, and molecular dimensions of colon cancer management. Relevant work includes studies of tumour biology that inform therapy, such as the role of prostate apoptosis response protein-4 and E-cadherin in inhibiting metastasis, and the use of microRNA quantification for diagnostic screening. Related research addresses precursor pathology and prevention, including serrated lesions and carcinogenic pathways, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for chemoprevention, anatomical contributors to interval cancer, surgical restoration of bowel continuity, and population screening with faecal immunochemical testing. Together these strands underscore that effective colon cancer treatment integrates accurate staging, surgery, systemic therapy, and an understanding of the underlying molecular biology.
