Overview
Colorectal cancer resection is the surgical removal of a malignant tumor of the colon or rectum, together with an appropriate margin of healthy bowel and the associated lymphatic drainage, undertaken with the aim of achieving complete tumor clearance and, where possible, cure. The extent and approach depend on tumor location and stage, ranging from segmental colectomy to low anterior or abdominoperineal resection, and may be performed by open or laparoscopic technique, sometimes in emergency settings or as part of multivisceral pelvic operations. Restoration of bowel continuity and reconstruction of the abdominal wall are integral surgical considerations. Research surrounding colorectal cancer resection addresses both perioperative risk and the broader pathway of care. Studies of biomarkers such as natriuretic peptide examine the prediction of cardiac morbidity and mortality in patients undergoing resection, reflecting concern with surgical fitness and postoperative outcome. Allied work spans the screening and detection that precede surgery, including fecal immunochemical testing and colonoscopy, the carcinogenic pathways and serrated lesions that give rise to resectable disease, and adjunctive and preventive considerations including chemoprevention and molecular markers of metastasis. Collectively this literature frames resection as a central therapeutic procedure embedded within diagnosis, risk assessment, and long-term management of colorectal cancer.
