Overview

Colon surgery, or colectomy, is the operative removal of all or part of the large intestine, performed to treat conditions such as colorectal cancer, diverticular disease, inflammatory bowel disease, obstruction, perforation, and volvulus. Procedures range from segmental resections, such as hemicolectomy and sigmoid colectomy, to total colectomy, and may be carried out through open or minimally invasive laparoscopic approaches. After resection, bowel continuity is commonly restored by anastomosis, though a temporary or permanent stoma may be required in emergency or high-risk situations. The aims are to remove diseased tissue, eliminate or control malignancy, and preserve or re-establish gastrointestinal function. This topic spans the indications, techniques, and outcomes of colorectal surgery, with emphasis on cancer. Relevant work includes restoration of bowel continuity after an emergency Hartmann's procedure and the management of small-bowel volvulus due to malrotation, illustrating both elective and emergency operative scenarios. Related research addresses the pathology that surgery treats, including serrated lesions and carcinogenic pathways, anatomical factors such as taller haustral folds linked to interval colorectal cancer, molecular diagnostics for colon cancer screening, and the biology of tumour metastasis and gene expression in colorectal tissue. Together these strands frame colon surgery as a central component of managing both benign and malignant large-bowel disease.
