Overview

The colon, also called the large intestine, is the final major segment of the gastrointestinal tract, responsible for absorbing water and electrolytes from digested material, forming and storing stool, and housing much of the gut microbiota. In the context of Colon And Rectal Cancer, the colon is the site where malignant tumors most often arise from precancerous polyps in the mucosal lining, making it central to the study of colorectal carcinogenesis, screening, and treatment. Colorectal cancer is among the most commonly diagnosed cancers worldwide, and early detection through colonoscopy and other screening tests can identify precancerous lesions and early-stage disease, substantially improving outcomes. Research in Colon And Rectal Cancer has addressed several of these dimensions, including how taller haustral folds in the proximal colon may contribute to interval colorectal cancer, the use of microRNA quantification by digital PCR for diagnostic screening, the role of Prostate Apoptosis Response Protein-4 overexpression in inhibiting metastasis through E-cadherin upregulation, and the emerging serrated-lesion pathway in colorectal carcinogenesis. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to the colon, its diseases, and the diagnosis and management of colorectal cancer.
