Overview

Mental health is a state of psychological, emotional, and social wellbeing in which an individual can manage ordinary stresses, work productively, and sustain meaningful relationships; it is a positive dimension of health rather than merely the absence of disorder. Mental health is shaped by interacting biological, psychological, and social factors, including stress, trauma, physical illness, life transitions, and access to support, and when disrupted it gives rise to conditions such as depression and anxiety that impair quality of life and functioning. Structured psychological interventions, prominently Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, address mental-health problems by modifying maladaptive patterns of thought and behavior. Research relevant to this topic examines stigma and compassion satisfaction among mental health service providers, religion and mental health, mental-health disparities among LGBTQ+ youth, mental-health correlates in cancer survivors, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health, compassion fatigue among psychiatric staff, and community-based mentoring and coaching to promote mental health in school-aged children. Related work addresses the global measurement of mental health and the consequences of emotional repression. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on the determinants, promotion, assessment, and psychological treatment of mental health, including cognitive and behavioral approaches to mood, anxiety, and stress-related conditions across diverse populations.
