Overview
Children are individuals in the developmental period from infancy through the onset of puberty, a stage of rapid physical growth and cognitive, emotional, and social maturation during which enduring patterns of health, behavior, and development are established. Pediatric and child-health science addresses the distinctive vulnerabilities of this group, including susceptibility to infectious disease and malnutrition, the importance of nutrition and immunization, neurodevelopmental and behavioral conditions, and the influence of family and environment; psychological and behavioral approaches, including cognitive and behavioral interventions, are applied to support emotional regulation, resilience, and adaptive functioning. Research relevant to this topic examines the prevalence and determinants of diarrhea and undernutrition among under-five children, children's understanding of fluid intake and the influence of siblings, feeding problems in children with autism spectrum disorders, building resilience among children and youth with ADHD through protective factors, intestinal helminth infection and its impact on nutrition, and disclosure of HIV diagnosis to infected children. Related work addresses vitamin A deficiency, acute malnutrition and recovery, and complementary feeding. Collectively these studies span the nutritional, infectious, developmental, and behavioral health of children. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on the physical, behavioral, and developmental health of children, including resilience and neurodevelopmental conditions, relevant to cognitive behavioral approaches and child health.
