Overview

Treatment of HIV infection is the antiretroviral management of human immunodeficiency virus across the full course of infection, from early diagnosis through long-term maintenance, aimed at suppressing viral replication below detectable levels, reconstituting CD4 T-lymphocyte immunity, preventing opportunistic disease, and reducing transmission risk. Combination antiretroviral therapy pairs agents of differing mechanisms to forestall resistance, and contemporary practice favours early and universal initiation regardless of immune stage. Optimal care integrates adherence support, monitoring for adverse drug reactions and comorbidities, and management of long-term effects of both the virus and its therapy on organ systems.
