Overview

HIV testing and diagnosis is the process of detecting infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and confirming a diagnosis so that care and treatment can begin. Testing identifies the presence of HIV antibodies, antigens, or viral genetic material in blood or other bodily fluids, using methods that range from rapid point-of-care and self-tests to laboratory-based antibody/antigen assays and nucleic acid tests. Because early tests may not detect very recent infection during the window period, confirmatory and supplemental testing is used to establish a definitive diagnosis, and timely diagnosis is critical for linking individuals to antiretroviral therapy, preventing onward transmission, and improving long-term outcomes. Quality assurance, accessibility, counseling, and disclosure are important components of effective testing programs, particularly in high-burden settings. Within the scope of Clinical Research In HIV AIDS And Prevention, this collection includes related work on HIV testing programs and diagnostic challenges, including an evaluation of an external quality assessment program for HIV testing in Ethiopia and a report of a false-positive rapid HIV test. The page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to HIV detection, diagnostic accuracy, testing programs, and prevention.
