Overview

HIV-1 positive patients are individuals confirmed to carry human immunodeficiency virus type 1, the predominant and most virulent HIV species worldwide, which progressively depletes CD4 T-lymphocytes and impairs cell-mediated immunity. Clinical care of this population centres on antiretroviral therapy to achieve and maintain virological suppression, immune reconstitution monitored through CD4 count, and surveillance for opportunistic infections, malignancies, and treatment-related toxicities. Beyond virological control, comprehensive management encompasses adverse-drug-reaction monitoring, adherence support, and attention to comorbidities and the psychosocial dimensions of living with a chronic, stigmatised infection. The research in this area characterises HIV-1 positive cohorts across several domains: patterns and direct costs of adverse drug reactions to highly active antiretroviral therapy, the prevalence of osteoporosis and its correlation with CD4 count and clinical staging, HIV-associated peripheral neuropathy, opportunistic conditions such as cryptococcal meningitis and conjunctival squamous cell carcinoma, immunological effects of adjunct interventions, and psychosocial predictors of treatment adherence and diagnosis disclosure, including in children and orphaned populations. The journal publishes peer-reviewed studies documenting the clinical, immunological, and psychosocial profile of HIV-1 positive patients and the determinants of their outcomes across varied healthcare settings.
