Overview
HIV-1 (Human Immunodeficiency Virus type 1) is a retrovirus that infects and destroys cells of the immune system, particularly CD4 T cells, and is the principal cause of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) worldwide. HIV-1 is transmitted through blood, semen, vaginal fluids, and breast milk, and by progressively depleting the immune system it leaves infected individuals vulnerable to opportunistic infections and certain cancers. It is the more widespread and virulent of the two main human immunodeficiency viruses and remains a major global health challenge. The virus replicates using enzymes such as reverse transcriptase and protease, which are key targets for antiretroviral drugs; the same enzymes are studied in efforts to identify new inhibitors, including those derived from natural and phytochemical compounds. Research in the field spans virology and drug discovery, prevention strategies such as pre-exposure prophylaxis and counselling and testing, diagnostic accuracy, clinical management, and the social and behavioural dimensions of living with HIV. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on HIV/AIDS and prevention reflecting these themes, including docking studies of HIV-1 reverse transcriptase and protease with plant compounds, the effects of phytochemical interventions in HIV-1-seropositive individuals, adherence to pre-exposure prophylaxis, risk factors identified through counselling and testing, diagnostic test performance, and theoretical frameworks for working with people living with HIV and AIDS.
