Overview
Complications of HIV infection are the wide range of health problems that can arise when the human immunodeficiency virus progressively weakens the immune system by depleting CD4 T-cells, leaving the body vulnerable to disease. As immune function declines, individuals become susceptible to opportunistic infections such as tuberculosis, certain pneumonias, and cryptococcal meningitis, as well as to particular cancers. Beyond opportunistic disease, HIV infection is associated with complications affecting many organ systems, including cardiovascular disease, bone loss, kidney disease, and disorders of the nervous system. Effective antiretroviral therapy has greatly reduced the incidence of severe complications by suppressing the virus and restoring immune function, yet ongoing monitoring remains important. Research published in this journal has examined several such complications, including asymptomatic myocardial ischemia among HIV-infected individuals, HIV-associated peripheral neuropathy in patients receiving antiretroviral therapy, reduced bone density and its relationship to CD4 count and clinical staging, squamous cell carcinoma of the conjunctiva in the setting of HIV, and cryptococcal meningitis, together illustrating the breadth of organ involvement in HIV disease. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to the complications of HIV infection, their detection, and their management.
