Overview

Care and treatment of HIV/AIDS refers to the clinical and supportive management of people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), centred on antiretroviral therapy (ART) to suppress the virus, preserve immune function, and prevent progression to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Modern treatment combines lifelong antiretroviral medication with monitoring, management of co-infections and side effects, prevention of onward transmission, and psychosocial and nutritional support. Effective, sustained treatment can reduce the viral load to very low levels, allowing many people with HIV to live long and healthy lives. Beyond the pharmacology, HIV care depends heavily on adherence, access to services, and the social context of those affected, making it both a biomedical and a social challenge. The research collected here reflects this breadth, including studies of antiretroviral treatment adherence and its psychosocial determinants, adverse drug reactions to highly active antiretroviral therapy, clinical profiles and outcomes of hospitalized patients, and the long-term disability and health outcomes of people on long-term ART. Other articles address sociocultural barriers to care, the support needs of orphans, HIV status disclosure, counselling and testing, pre-exposure prophylaxis, and the nutritional challenges faced by people living with HIV. Together they illustrate that successful care and treatment integrate medical therapy with prevention, support, and attention to the wider determinants of health.
