Overview

Pulmonary embolism is a potentially life-threatening condition in which one or more blood clots lodge in the pulmonary arteries, obstructing blood flow from the heart to the lungs. Most emboli originate as deep vein thromboses in the legs or pelvis that break free and travel through the venous circulation, making pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis two manifestations of the broader entity known as venous thromboembolism. Common features include sudden shortness of breath, chest pain, rapid heart rate, and, in severe cases, haemodynamic collapse; because presentation is variable and can mimic other disorders, prompt diagnosis and risk stratification are essential to guiding treatment and reducing mortality. Risk factors include recent surgery, immobility, malignancy, inherited and acquired clotting disorders, and certain hormonal therapies, and diagnosis typically combines clinical assessment, imaging, and laboratory biomarkers. The journal publishes case reports and related studies that illustrate the diagnosis, management, and outcomes of pulmonary embolism and associated thrombotic conditions. Reported work touches on biomarker-based risk stratification, embolism linked to hormonal contraception, venous thromboembolism after orthopaedic surgery, intracardiac thrombus, inherited bleeding and coagulation abnormalities, and thrombotic complications associated with COVID-19. Key aspects include the venous-thromboembolism spectrum, risk assessment, diagnostic imaging, and anticoagulant management.
