Overview
A clinical case report is a detailed, structured account of the diagnosis, management, and outcome of one patient or a small series, used to document unusual presentations, rare diseases, unexpected disease associations, novel diagnostic findings, or instructive treatment responses. Clinical review combines such observations with the surrounding literature to synthesize current understanding of a condition. Together they form a foundational genre of medical communication: case reports generate hypotheses, alert clinicians to emerging patterns, and capture detail that large trials cannot, while reviews place individual cases within established evidence. A well-constructed report typically follows a defined structure covering presenting complaint, relevant history, physical examination, laboratory and imaging investigations, histopathology where applicable, differential diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up, often illustrated with clinical and radiological images. The work documented in this area spans oncology, surgery, and other specialties, including uncommon tumor locations, collision and incidentally discovered neoplasms, and postoperative complications that mimic other conditions. Because reports rest on single observations, they sit lower in the evidence hierarchy and require careful interpretation, yet they remain indispensable for medical education, for recognizing adverse events, and for prompting the systematic studies that later confirm or refute the patterns they describe.
