Overview

Surgical pathology is the medical specialty that involves diagnosis of disease based on examination of a patient's surgically removed tissues. It is a key field of pathology which plays an integral role in patient care. Surgical pathology includes gross examination of the excised tissue by a pathologist, microscopic examination of tissue sections by a pathologist, and special clinical laboratory tests. It is used to determine the presence, extent and type of disease in a patient, to suggest possible treatments and to establish the prognosis. Surgical pathology plays a vital role in the diagnosis of cancer, pre-cancerous lesions, infectious diseases, and other diseases. The information gathered during the surgical pathology analysis has significant implications for a patient's treatment and prognosis. It is an invaluable tool in the practice of modern healthcare.
