Overview
Inoculation is the deliberate introduction of a microorganism, antigen, or biological agent into a host, medium, or substrate to elicit a defined biological response. In immunology and medicine the term denotes administration of antigenic material to induce protective immunity, the historical foundation of vaccination against diseases such as diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, measles, and hepatitis B. In microbiology and agronomy it describes the introduction of defined microbial cultures, for example seeding growth media for isolation and susceptibility testing, or applying symbiotic microorganisms such as arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and beneficial bacteria to soils and crops to enhance nutrient acquisition, yield, and disease suppression. Across these settings inoculation depends on viable, characterized inocula, appropriate dose and timing, and a receptive host or substrate. Research relevant to this area includes microbial bio-fertilizer and mycorrhizal inoculation of corn, potato, sorghum, and olive systems with spectroscopic yield assessment, the operation of high-volume immunization clinics, and culture-based detection of infectious agents such as cryptococcal meningitis and dermatophytes. The journal publishes peer-reviewed work spanning immunization practice and applied microbiology, reflecting the shared principle that controlled introduction of biological agents can confer protection, establish colonization, or enable diagnostic and agricultural outcomes across clinical and environmental contexts.
