Overview
Chromosomes are thread-like structures composed of DNA and proteins that carry genetic information in living cells. Research published in Chromosomes examines diverse aspects of chromosome structure, function, and clinical significance across multiple organisms and contexts. Studies have investigated chromosomal characteristics in organisms ranging from the social amoeba Dictyostelium giganteum to model organisms like Drosophila melanogaster, as well as agricultural species including cocoyam. Clinical research has documented specific chromosomal abnormalities and their implications, including pericentric inversions, translocations in pediatric leukemia patients, and the detection of the Philadelphia chromosome in hematological conditions. Additional work has explored mathematical patterns in human Chromosomes, particularly examining fractal characteristics in chromosome 1 and chromosome 4 in relation to evolutionary and cognitive traits. The journal has also published research on telomeres, the protective structures at chromosome ends, and their relationship to oxidative stress and aging. Further contributions address the role of Chromosomes in speciation processes and precision breeding applications in plant genetics. This body of work reflects the fundamental importance of Chromosomes in heredity, development, disease, and evolutionary biology.
