Overview

Learning disabilities are neurodevelopmental conditions that affect how individuals take in, process, and use information, leading to difficulties in specific areas such as reading, writing, mathematics, language, attention, memory, or organization. They are not a measure of overall intelligence; many people with learning disabilities have average or above-average intellectual ability and can succeed academically and in life with appropriate identification, support, and accommodations. Learning disabilities typically become apparent during childhood and schooling, where their effects on learning are most visible, and recognizing them early allows for targeted educational and therapeutic strategies. Research relevant to this topic includes work on supporting students with additional educational needs, such as assistive technologies for learners with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and teaching and learning methodologies for learners with special educational needs. As a topic within Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and development, learning disabilities connect the understanding of how children learn and develop with the educational and clinical approaches used to support them. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to learning disabilities and the broader study of child and adolescent development.
