Overview

Child development is the study of the biological, cognitive, emotional, social, and behavioral changes that unfold from birth through adolescence, and of the processes and influences that shape them. It encompasses interrelated domains, including physical growth and motor coordination; cognitive capacities such as language, memory, and problem solving; and social-emotional development of attachment, self-regulation, identity, and empathy. Development is understood through the interaction of genetic endowment and environment, including nutrition, caregiving, family economic status, health, and education, and is commonly tracked against expected milestones to distinguish typical from atypical trajectories and to guide early intervention. Knowledge of child development informs parenting, education, pediatrics, and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Research relevant to this topic addresses growth monitoring and task-shifting in health facilities, the impact of computer use on child health, risk factors for stunted growth among young children, household economic status and childhood micronutrient deficiency, and the influence of maternal behavior on a child's attachment-related cortisol stress response. Related work examines complementary feeding, child mortality, and community-based mentoring for school-aged children. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on the physical, cognitive, behavioral, and psychosocial development of children, including the nutritional, familial, and environmental determinants of healthy growth and development relevant to Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
