Overview
Thyroid cancer is a malignancy arising from the cells of the thyroid gland, a butterfly-shaped endocrine organ in the neck that produces hormones regulating metabolism. It encompasses several histological types, including differentiated cancers such as papillary and follicular carcinoma, which generally carry a favourable prognosis, as well as medullary, poorly differentiated and anaplastic forms that are more aggressive. Common presenting features include a palpable neck lump or thyroid nodule, and sometimes difficulty swallowing, breathing or hoarseness, although many tumours are detected incidentally. Diagnosis relies on imaging, fine-needle aspiration cytology and, increasingly, molecular testing, while treatment typically involves surgery, radioactive iodine for differentiated tumours, thyroid-hormone therapy and, in selected cases, targeted or ablative approaches. Early-stage disease is often curable, and rising recorded incidence has prompted debate about detection and overdiagnosis. Research published in this journal addresses many of these themes, including secular trends in thyroid cancer incidence and thyroidectomy, treatment outcomes of differentiated thyroid cancer after surgery and radioactive iodine, molecular diagnosis and management, the role of transcription factors in cancer-cell proliferation, microRNA profiling across tumour grades, trace-element content of malignant nodules, and image-guided ablation of thyroid tumours. Together these studies reflect interest in the epidemiology, molecular biology, biomarkers, diagnosis and treatment of thyroid cancer.
