Overview

Cancer is a group of diseases characterized by the uncontrolled proliferation of cells that acquire the ability to invade surrounding tissue and disseminate to distant organs. It originates from progressive genetic and epigenetic changes that activate oncogenes, inactivate tumor-suppressor genes, and dysregulate signaling pathways governing growth, survival, and genome stability. These molecular alterations define tumor behavior and increasingly form the basis for diagnosis, classification, and treatment selection through genetic and biomarker analysis. From a genetics and biomarker perspective, research focuses on identifying the mutations, expression signatures, and molecular features that drive initiation and progression and that can be measured to detect disease, stratify risk, and predict response. Representative work addresses the mutational landscape of TP53 in oral cancer, epigenetic biomarkers in head and neck cancer, and the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying sporadic solid tumors and therapeutic resistance at relapse. Other lines of inquiry develop immunoassays and immunogenomic approaches for monitoring disease, model complex tumors for biomarker discovery, and examine compounds with anticancer activity. Studies of screening uptake, survival, and incidence trends connect these molecular insights to population outcomes. Collectively, the field links the biology of malignant transformation to actionable biomarkers, advancing earlier detection, precise classification, and individualized management across cancer types.
