Overview
A mother is a female parent who bears, gives birth to, and typically provides primary care for offspring. Research in Breastfeeding Biology examines the mother's central role in infant nutrition, health outcomes, and early development. Published studies address maternal knowledge and awareness of breast milk composition, the biological mechanisms through which mothers transfer protective factors such as melatonin to infants, and the physiological processes underlying milk production and expression. Investigations explore maternal beliefs and perceptions about exclusive breastfeeding across different cultural and socioeconomic contexts, as well as factors influencing perceived milk adequacy. The mother-infant relationship extends beyond nutrition to encompass behavioral and stress-response dimensions, including how maternal behavior shapes infant cortisol reactivity and attachment patterns. Research also considers the mother's role in growth monitoring and caregiving at health facilities, and examines maternal-fetal genetic interactions that may influence health outcomes. Additionally, studies investigate maternal health conditions and their implications for both mother and child, including infectious disease transmission risks. Understanding the multifaceted biological, behavioral, and social dimensions of motherhood informs strategies to support maternal and infant health during the critical breastfeeding period.
