Overview

Maternal health encompasses the physical, nutritional, and psychosocial wellbeing of women during preconception, pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period, together with the health-system factors that determine access to safe and effective care. It is shaped by antenatal and obstetric services, nutrition, the management of complications such as anemia, gestational diabetes, and obstructed labor, and by social, economic, and geographic determinants that influence utilization. The studies assembled here emphasize service delivery and outcomes, often in low-resource and African settings: barriers and facilitators to maternal and child health care delivered by community health workers, integration of traditional maternal care with national health systems, mobile-phone communication and antenatal-care uptake, and the utilization of nutrition services for pregnant women. Clinical and outcome research includes cesarean delivery rates and maternal-fetal outcomes, quality indicators for maternal and newborn care, and the prevalence of burnout, traumatic stress, anxiety, and depression among maternal and neonatal healthcare staff. Additional work addresses nutritional status of women and children, fetal surgery, and ethics in coastal and indigenous maternal nutrition. Methods range from qualitative interviews and cross-sectional surveys to retrospective descriptive analyses and program evaluations.
