Overview
In the context of Breastfeeding Biology, the infant is the developing human in the first year of life, a period defined by rapid somatic growth, organ maturation, and dependence on milk-derived nutrition and immune protection. Infant physiology in this window is shaped by feeding mode, the macronutrient and bioactive composition of human milk or formula, the establishment of the gut microbiota, and maternal and caregiver factors. Research grounded here addresses how breast milk composition and its handling affect the infant: studies examine the macronutrient integrity of expressed breastmilk under different storage containers, the role of milk constituents such as melatonin in perinatal health, and the use of partially hydrolyzed whey-based formulas with probiotic supplementation in infants with perceived intolerance. Related work considers maternal behavior and attachment-related cortisol stress responses, the influence of religion and culture on infant feeding practices, perceived milk adequacy and home-based lactation support, and growth monitoring within health systems. Clinical case reports describe neonatal and infant conditions including tracheoesophageal fistula with meconium aspiration in a preterm infant and cutaneous myiasis. Methods range from compositional and laboratory analyses to feasibility studies, cross-sectional surveys, and case reports. This topic assembles peer-reviewed research on infant nutrition, feeding practices, and early-life health outcomes.
