Overview

Breast milk is the milk produced by a mother's mammary glands to nourish her infant, providing a complete and adaptable source of nutrition during early life. It supplies energy, proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals in proportions suited to a growing baby, and it also contains antibodies, hormones, enzymes, and bioactive components that support immune defense and development. Its composition changes over time and between feeds to meet the infant's evolving needs. Breast milk and breastfeeding are central to infant and maternal health, offering protection against infections and contributing to long-term health outcomes, which is why exclusive breastfeeding in early infancy is widely recommended. The study of breast milk spans its biochemical composition, expression and storage, and the social, cultural, and behavioral factors that shape feeding practices. Research in this journal and across related OpenAccessPub titles reflects these areas, including awareness of breast-milk composition among women, examination of maternal assets and milk expression, the implications of melatonin in breast milk for perinatal health, the nutritional impact of storage containers on macronutrient integrity, programs to promote perceived adequate milk supply, and the beliefs and determinants influencing exclusive breastfeeding across diverse populations.
