Overview
Breastfeeding is the biological provision of human milk from the lactating mother to her infant, delivering species-specific nutrition together with immunoglobulins, hormones, growth factors, and other bioactive constituents that support infant growth, immune maturation, and maternal-infant attachment. Lactation is governed by neuroendocrine control of milk synthesis and ejection, and milk composition and supply are influenced by maternal physiology, circadian factors, and feeding practice, with exclusive breastfeeding studied for its protective associations with infant morbidity. Research relevant to this area examines breastfeeding and melatonin in the context of perinatal health, the examination of maternal assets in relation to breast-milk expression, and the composition of breast milk and awareness of it among mothers. Allied work addresses the role of religion in lactating mothers' infant-feeding practices, home-based programmes to promote perceived milk adequacy, beliefs surrounding exclusive breastfeeding, the prevalence of diarrhoea in young children, and maternal and infant micronutrient status. These studies integrate lactation physiology, maternal and child nutrition, immunology, and public health to clarify how human milk and feeding practice shape infant and maternal outcomes. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on Breastfeeding Biology, lactation, and the composition and benefits of human milk.
