Overview

Plant biotechnology is the application of scientific tools and techniques to modify, propagate, and improve plants and to harness plant systems for research and commercial production. It encompasses genetic engineering, in which defined genes are introduced or edited to confer traits such as pest and disease resistance, herbicide tolerance, drought and salinity adaptation, or enhanced nutritional content, as well as marker-assisted selection, which uses molecular markers to accelerate conventional breeding. The field relies on plant tissue culture and micropropagation to regenerate whole plants from cells and to multiply elite genotypes, and on transformation methods, including Agrobacterium-mediated and direct gene transfer, to deliver genetic material into plant genomes. Genome editing technologies now enable precise, targeted changes to plant DNA. Beyond crop improvement, plant biotechnology extends to molecular farming, the production of pharmaceuticals, enzymes, and other valuable compounds in plant hosts, and to the study of plant responses to environmental stress at the proteomic and physiological levels. It draws on genomics, bioinformatics, and metabolic engineering to connect genotype with phenotype. Research priorities include sustainable yield improvement, reduced chemical input, climate resilience, biofortification, and the safe and regulated deployment of genetically modified and gene-edited crops.
