Overview
Cellular biology, also called cell biology, is the branch of biology that studies the structure, function, and behavior of cells, the basic units of life. It examines the organelles and molecular machinery within cells, the processes by which cells obtain energy, grow, divide, and die, and the ways cells communicate with one another and respond to their environment. Because all living organisms are made of cells, cellular biology provides a foundation for understanding how tissues, organs, and whole organisms function, and how disruptions at the cellular level give rise to disease. The field integrates knowledge from biochemistry, molecular biology, and genetics, using techniques such as microscopy, cell culture, and molecular labeling to observe cellular components and track dynamic processes in living cells. Insights from cellular biology underpin advances in medicine, biotechnology, and the development of new therapies. Biotechnology and Biomedical Science publishes peer-reviewed research relevant to the molecular and cellular basis of life and its applications, including studies of RNA-binding proteins in molecular and cellular biology, biomaterials and scaffolds for tissue engineering, and proteomic analyses of cells and organisms. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to cellular biology and the study of cells.
