Overview
Materials science is the interdisciplinary study of the relationships between the composition, structure, processing, properties and performance of materials, drawing on physics, chemistry and engineering to design substances with targeted behaviour. Its central paradigm links structure at scales from the atomic and crystalline to the microstructural and macroscopic with measurable properties such as mechanical strength, thermal and electrical conductivity, optical response and chemical stability. Materials are commonly classified into metals, ceramics, polymers, composites and semiconductors, with emerging emphasis on nanomaterials and Biomaterials engineered for specific applications. A major branch concerns Biomaterials and tissue engineering, where porous scaffolds, including calcium orthophosphate and other calcium phosphate ceramics, are formulated to support cell attachment, osteoconduction and bone regeneration while matching the mechanical and resorption requirements of host tissue. Other work addresses the interaction of materials with energy, such as the absorption and conversion of concentrated solar radiation by absorber materials. Characterisation underpins the field, employing spectroscopic, diffraction, thermal-analysis and microscopy methods to resolve composition, phase, crystallinity and isotopic features. By correlating processing routes with resulting microstructure and function, materials science enables the rational development of materials for medicine, energy, electronics and structural use.
