Overview
The types of diabetes mellitus are the distinct forms of a group of metabolic disorders characterized by chronically elevated blood glucose resulting from problems with insulin production, insulin action, or both. The main types are type 1 diabetes, an autoimmune condition in which the immune system destroys the insulin-producing beta cells of the pancreas, leading to little or no insulin; type 2 diabetes, the most common form, in which the body becomes resistant to insulin and eventually cannot produce enough to maintain normal glucose levels, and which is strongly associated with obesity and lifestyle factors; and gestational diabetes, which arises during pregnancy and raises the risk of complications for mother and child. Additional, less common forms include those caused by specific genetic mutations or other underlying conditions. Distinguishing among the types is important because they differ in cause, onset, and management, ranging from insulin replacement to lifestyle modification and oral medications. Within the scope of this journal's focus on Bioinformatics And Diabetes, the different forms of diabetes are studied through molecular, metabolic, and computational approaches. Related research in the journal addresses gestational diabetes, including risk factors and pregnancy outcomes, and the metabolomics of type 2 diabetes mellitus. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to the types of diabetes mellitus.
