Overview

Insulin is a peptide hormone secreted by the beta cells of the pancreatic islets that regulates glucose homeostasis by promoting cellular glucose uptake, glycogen synthesis, and lipid and protein anabolism while suppressing hepatic glucose output. Defects in insulin secretion or in insulin sensitivity at target tissues underlie diabetes mellitus, and insulin signalling intersects with broader metabolic and proliferative pathways through receptors and downstream substrates. Research and clinical practice address insulin replacement, the assessment of insulin sensitivity and resistance, and the stability and delivery of insulin. Research relevant to this area examines the development of a model-based noninvasive glucose-monitoring device for non-insulin-dependent people, the stability of insulin in cell-culture media under EDTA and selenite, and the differential regulation of matrix metalloproteinase 2 by the interplay between glucose and insulin. Allied work addresses surrogate indices of insulin sensitivity in obese postmenopausal women, cinnamon supplementation and insulin resistance in polycystic ovary syndrome, adjunctive plant-based therapies in diabetic models, bioinformatics of metabolomics in type 2 diabetes, and insulin-receptor substrate expression in breast cancer. These studies integrate endocrinology, metabolism, biochemistry, and bioinformatics to clarify insulin's regulation, action, and dysregulation. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on insulin biology, glucose metabolism, and the bioinformatics and clinical science of diabetes.
