Overview

Diseases of diabetes are the spectrum of disorders that result from, or are closely associated with, diabetes mellitus, a metabolic condition defined by chronic hyperglycaemia arising from impaired insulin secretion or action. These include microvascular complications such as nephropathy, retinopathy, and neuropathy, macrovascular disease, and associated metabolic and infectious conditions, whose development reflects glycaemic control, duration of disease, and individual susceptibility. Understanding these diseases draws on clinical medicine alongside bioinformatic and computational analysis of disease-associated genes and pathways. Research relevant to this area examines bioinformatic resources for diabetic nephropathy, computational analysis of disease-associated SNPs and transcription-factor binding sites, and bioinformatics of metabolomics in type 2 diabetes. Allied work addresses the diabetes-depression link via kynurenine and vitamin B6 pathways, the role of in vitro disease models in preclinical safety testing, dietary and lifestyle influences on chronic-disease risk factors, depressive symptoms in diabetic cardiovascular risk, and infectious complications such as post-COVID mucormycosis in diabetic patients. These studies integrate endocrinology, bioinformatics, genetics, and clinical epidemiology to clarify the mechanisms and management of diabetes-related disease.
