Overview
Diabetes mellitus is a group of chronic metabolic disorders defined by persistent hyperglycaemia resulting from defects in insulin secretion, insulin action, or both. Its principal forms include type 1 diabetes, characterised by autoimmune beta-cell destruction, type 2 diabetes, driven by insulin resistance with relative insulin deficiency, and gestational diabetes arising in pregnancy. Sustained hyperglycaemia damages vascular, renal, neural, and ocular tissues, and management combines lifestyle modification, pharmacotherapy, and increasingly data-driven prediction and monitoring. Research relevant to this area examines bioinformatics of metabolomics in type 2 diabetes, the diabetes-depression link via kynurenine and vitamin B6 pathways, bioinformatic resources for diabetic nephropathy, and biopsychosocial models of self-management and quality of life. Allied work addresses gestational diabetes risk factors and outcomes, prediabetes assessment in primary care, adjunctive plant-based therapies in diabetic models, paediatric diabetes trends, and machine-learning approaches to diabetes prediction. These studies integrate clinical endocrinology, metabolism, genetics, and bioinformatics to clarify the mechanisms, prediction, and management of diabetes across its forms. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on the pathophysiology, genetics, bioinformatics, and clinical care of diabetes mellitus.
