Overview

The circulatory system is the organ system that transports blood, and with it oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and waste products, throughout the body. In humans it comprises the heart, which acts as a muscular pump, and a network of blood vessels: arteries that carry blood away from the heart, veins that return it, and capillaries where exchange with tissues occurs. The system is conventionally divided into the systemic circulation, which supplies the body's tissues, and the pulmonary circulation, which carries blood to and from the lungs for gas exchange. Driven by the rhythmic contraction of the heart, blood delivers oxygen and nutrients to cells and removes carbon dioxide and metabolic byproducts, while also distributing immune cells, signaling molecules, and heat. Regulation involves cardiac output, vascular tone, and blood pressure, coordinated by neural and hormonal control to match perfusion to demand. The circulatory system is closely integrated with the respiratory, renal, and endocrine systems, and its dysfunction underlies major diseases such as atherosclerosis, hypertension, heart failure, and stroke. Understanding its anatomy, physiology, and pathology is fundamental to cardiovascular medicine and to the study of how the body maintains internal balance.
