Overview

Blood sugar, or blood glucose, is the concentration of glucose circulating in the bloodstream, the body's primary metabolic fuel, maintained within a narrow range by the opposing actions of insulin and counter-regulatory hormones. Glucose homeostasis depends on hepatic production, peripheral uptake, and pancreatic islet function, and its chronic dysregulation defines diabetes and contributes to metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular risk. Measurement and modulation of blood glucose, through laboratory assays, continuous monitoring, diet, and pharmacological or plant-based agents, are central to metabolic medicine. Research relevant to this area examines the clinical application of Momordica charantia (bitter melon) for reducing blood sugar in type 2 diabetes, the benefits of Trigonella foenum-graecum extract as adjunctive therapy in diabetic models, and non-invasive continuous blood-glucose measurement techniques. Allied work addresses dietary interventions such as kale powder in metabolic syndrome, gene polymorphisms associated with type 2 diabetes susceptibility, anthropometric predictors of metabolic risk, and the effects of dietary fat and supplementation on glycaemia and insulin resistance. These studies integrate endocrinology, metabolism, nutrition, and biomedical engineering to clarify the regulation, measurement, and management of blood glucose. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on glucose metabolism, glycaemic control, and the bioinformatics and clinical science of diabetes.
