Overview

Bioinformatics is the interdisciplinary application of computational, statistical, and mathematical methods to the acquisition, storage, and interpretation of biological data, particularly sequences, structures, and high-throughput omics datasets. It encompasses sequence alignment and annotation, structural and functional prediction, network and pathway analysis, and the mining of genomic, transcriptomic, and proteomic data to generate hypotheses about biological function and disease. Its tools and curated resources support diagnosis, biomarker discovery, and the analysis of genetic variation. Research relevant to this area examines the emerging role of bioinformatics in biotechnology, the status of the Human Proteome Project in disease diagnosis and treatment, and bioinformatic resources for diabetic nephropathy. Allied work addresses bioinformatics of metabolomics in type 2 diabetes, functional and structural analysis of variants of uncertain significance in BRCA1, identification of disease-associated SNPs and candidate proteins in atherosclerosis, microRNA-mediated regulation of gene expression, and the absolute quantification of microRNAs for cancer diagnostics. These studies integrate computational biology, genomics, proteomics, and clinical research to translate large-scale biological data into mechanistic and diagnostic insight. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research applying bioinformatics and computational analysis to molecular biology, disease, and diabetes.
