Overview
Health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity, encompassing the capacity of individuals and communities to function, adapt, and flourish. In behavioural and mental-health research, health is understood as multidimensional, shaped by the interaction of individual, family, and community-level determinants and by psychological as well as physical factors. Mental health, an integral component, concerns emotional and psychological well-being and the ability to cope with stress, work productively, and sustain relationships; it is influenced by social environment, occupational demands, and access to support. Research in this area examines health outcomes across populations and life stages, including the well-being of students over an academic period, the mental health of cancer survivors in relation to individual and contextual factors, and the psychological strain experienced by mental-health service providers, where phenomena such as affiliate stigma, compassion fatigue, and compassion satisfaction affect both workforce wellbeing and care quality. Systems-based and behavioural frameworks further conceptualise health as the product of habits, hygiene, and sustainable self-management. By integrating physical, mental, and social dimensions and their determinants, study of health supports prevention, the promotion of well-being, and interventions that address both the burden on those who deliver care and the needs of the populations they serve.
