Overview
Global mental health is the area of study, research, and practice that prioritizes improving mental health and achieving equity in mental health care for all people worldwide, with particular attention to low-resource settings and the treatment gap between need and available services. It addresses the cross-cultural distribution of mental disorders, their social and structural determinants, and the scaling of prevention, promotion, and treatment through task-sharing, community-based delivery, and integration into general health systems. The field emphasizes context, culture, stigma, and the mental health workforce, including the well-being of frontline providers who experience compassion fatigue and burnout. Research relevant to this topic includes mental health promotion through global opinion data, systems-based frameworks for sustainable mental well-being, support for partners of veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder, the psychological burden and coping strategies of mental health service providers in psychiatric hospitals, community- and family-level correlates of mental health, family caregivers' knowledge of mental illness and its treatment, the mental dynamics of quarantine and social isolation, and self-monitoring in adaptive behavior change. Methods span surveys, qualitative studies, pilot interventions, and theoretical and review work across diverse national settings. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research relevant to global and cross-cultural mental health and its delivery.
