Overview

Dementia is an umbrella term for a group of progressive disorders characterized by a decline in cognitive abilities such as memory, reasoning, language, and judgment that is severe enough to interfere with daily life and independence. It results from damage to the brain caused by various diseases and conditions, with Alzheimer's disease being the most common underlying cause. Symptoms and their progression vary by type, ranging from mild to severe, and dementia commonly affects not only those diagnosed but also their families and caregivers. Because dementia is multifaceted, research spans its biology, diagnosis, behavioural symptoms, and care, and it frequently intersects with conditions such as depression and cognitive impairment. The studies collected here reflect this breadth, including non-pharmacological interventions for disrupted sleep in moderate-to-severe dementia, the use of videophone conversations and virtual reality in dementia care, and behaviour management for depression in dementia patients. Other work examines the relationship between depression, early life stress, and dementia, the neurobiology distinguishing aggression from agitation, dynamic network analysis of functional connectivity, and early prediction of Alzheimer's disease through retinal imaging. Further articles address caregivers' knowledge and misconceptions and the links between cortisol, depression, and brain atrophy in mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease. Together they illustrate the diverse scientific and clinical efforts to understand and manage dementia.
