Overview

Alzheimer's dementia is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder and the most common form of dementia, characterized by deterioration of memory, thinking, language, and behavior that interferes with daily functioning and independence. Alzheimer's disease typically develops gradually and is associated with pathological changes in the brain, including atrophy of regions such as the medial temporal lobe. Because it predominantly affects older adults and carries a substantial burden for patients, families, and caregivers, the topic spans early detection, accurate diagnosis, disease mechanisms, symptom management, and supportive care. Key aspects include distinguishing Alzheimer's from other causes of cognitive decline, identifying biomarkers and imaging measures for earlier diagnosis, understanding neuropsychiatric symptoms such as agitation and aggression, and addressing co-occurring conditions like depression and sleep disturbance. Research in this area also examines the experiences and knowledge of caregivers, including misconceptions about the disease. The journal publishes work relevant to these themes, including studies on non-pharmacological interventions for disrupted sleep in moderate-to-severe dementia, the relationship between depression and dementia, cortisol levels and medial temporal lobe atrophy in mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease, optical-imaging approaches for early prediction, and analyses of caregiver knowledge gaps, reflecting both the clinical and the molecular and biomarker dimensions of the condition.
