Overview

Ayurvedic medicine is a classical system of healthcare originating on the Indian subcontinent that conceptualises health as a dynamic balance among the three doshas (vata, pitta, and kapha) and seeks to restore equilibrium through individualised intervention. Its therapeutic methods include herbal and herbomineral formulations, dietary regulation, detoxification procedures, yoga, and regulated breathing practices known as pranayama. A distinctive class of Ayurvedic preparations is the bhasma, a calcined metal- or mineral-based product whose particles fall within the nanoscale range, a feature that has drawn interest from researchers exploring the intersection of classical pharmacy and nanomedicine. Modern investigation of this tradition emphasises the physiological and biochemical basis of its interventions, for example the autonomic, respiratory, and neuroendocrine effects of controlled breathing, as well as the characterisation of plant materials and dietary components used within Ayurvedic practice. Sub-areas of inquiry include the standardisation and physicochemical analysis of formulations, immunomodulatory and anti-ageing effects evaluated in cell and animal models, and the integration of Ayurvedic principles with contemporary biomedical endpoints. The system remains significant both as a widely practised model of care and as a source of candidate therapeutics whose mechanisms can be tested experimentally. The journal publishes peer-reviewed studies addressing these formulations, practices, and their biological effects.
