Overview
Alternative and complementary medicine refers to a broad set of healthcare practices and products that fall outside conventional, mainstream medicine. The term covers approaches such as herbal and botanical remedies, acupuncture, massage and other bodywork, mind–body practices including yoga and relaxation techniques, and dietary modification. When used alongside conventional care these methods are described as complementary; when used in place of it they are termed alternative. Practices vary widely in their evidence base, and many remain the subject of ongoing investigation into their safety, mechanisms, and effectiveness. The peer-reviewed research gathered here reflects several established strands of this field. A review of medicinal plants and their traditional uses surveys the long history and contemporary interest in plant-derived remedies, a cornerstone of herbal and traditional medicine. A separate systematic review examines gluten- and casein-free dietary treatment in autism spectrum disorders, illustrating the study of dietary interventions used as complementary approaches. Together these open-access articles address botanical, dietary, and other non-conventional therapeutic practices, situating alternative and complementary medicine within a framework of scientific scrutiny. This page collects research relevant to the study and evaluation of complementary and alternative healthcare modalities.
